Following the principles of One Planet Living, the community of thirty households will obtain most of its resources and much of its income from site. The village centre will be close to the site entrance, where the parking is to be located. The homes will all be accessed via a pedestrian high street and overlook the village green. The remainder of the site will be largely dedicated to horticulture and micro-scale animal husbandry. MWD Architects have collaborated with Helygen Permaculture to develop a unified approach to the design of the entire site. The ecological approach to land management will ensure that the biodiversity of the site as a whole, including the built areas, will be greatly improved.

CADARNLE VILLAGE

Built for Community, Designed to Adapt.

In planning the community, we have looked to ensure that the spaces and relationship between them have familiar qualities and human scale and have found inspiration in the features of traditional villages such as the street, the square and the village green.

The community has been designed to suit a wide variety of households by integrating different housing types, each of which is able to adapt to individual needs as they change over time. There are three main dwelling types. One-bed units are suitable for single occupants or couples and are large enough to accommodate a home office or studio. The larger units, a two-bed house and a three-bed house, all have an adjacent room at ground level that can be accessed either from the house or from the front to give it the flexibility to become an additional bedroom, a home office, or studio and adapt its function as needs change.
